<h2>E-Commerce in Austria - stats and facts</h2>

Online shopping has become routine in Austria and mom-and-pop stores have been replaced by online shops in the past. According to Statistik Austria more than <strong>80%</strong> of all young adults (16-34 years) in Austria have <strong>shopped online in the past 12 months</strong>. The Austrian Economic Chamber of Trade, Commerce and Industry stated an annual <strong>turnover of 2.9 billion Euro</strong> by 2013 in the e-commerce sector and a significant increase of 30% between 2010 and 2013. This represents 4.5% of the total retail volume. Moreover, <strong>7,500 trading firms sell</strong> their <strong>products</strong> <strong>online</strong>. Hence, the importance of e-commerce in Austria cannot be denied.

<h2>The Anton Award</h2>

The <a href="http://www.a-commerce.at/" target="_blank">A-Commerce Team</a> is dedicated to the Austrian e-commerce branch. This year companies have been honored for their excellent work and innovations in the field of e-commerce for the second time. In cooperation with MasterCard the A-Commerce Team invited companies to participate in the A-Commerce Day and listen to top-class talks.

In the evening the Anton Award in the categories ‘Pure Player B2C’, ‘Brand Online Shop B2C’, ‘Multi Channel Enterprise B2C’, ‘Online Shop B2B’, ‘International Online Shop’ and ‘Innovation’ has been given to the happy winners selected by a professional jury. We are extremely happy that Lingohub is among the winners! :)

## On the vision of born global companies
Traditionally the internationalization of companies has been considered a two-step process. First of all the domestic market is developed. At a later stage, after several years of business and product development, other countries and markets become the focus of expansion. The reasons behind this expansion are very often the discovery of the growth potential of foreign markets, the utilization of economies of scale and competitive advantages, strategic market diversification or the answering of consumer demands.

Nowadays, in contrast to this two-step approach, many entrepreneurs see themselves as “born global”. From the very start they compete in the global market with an innovative product or service. This phenomenon has been growing rapidly in recent years, becoming increasingly important and gaining momentum.

In addition to the underlying vision and how the company sees itself, there are several other “born global” criteria which can be recognized. In many cases the companies are built up on innovative ideas and scalable products or services. Furthermore they focus on first-to-market advantages and capitalise on the opportunities provided by global market niches.

Part of this philosophy is also the readiness to take additional risks, to aim at faster growth, to deploy necessary resources, to adapt to new markets and to develop advanced managerial skills. Needless to say this endeavour is highly challenging and requires the support of all stakeholders in order to be able to succeed.

For the purpose of this award the term “born global” had been defined as follows:

There's a plethora of small and large tools out there that make life easier for startups (such as ours) to be product while maintaining a small foot print. While we constantly try new tools and apps, there is a list of 10 really well-done <em>tools for startups</em> that we can't go without even for a day. 

<h2>Our favorite 10 tools for startups</h2> 

<h3>1. <a href="http://drive.google.com" target="_blank">Google Drive</a>.</h3> 

There really is no way around some kind of office suite, and even though Google really stopped offering much for small teams on their free plan, it still remains a highly productive environment that constantly evolves and cuts down overhead. 

<h3>2. <a href="http://trello.com" target="_blank">Trello</a>.</h3> 

All project management tools have a problem, they won't fix your organizational discipline. Trello at least makes it fairly easy to organize groupwork, and its kanban view is quite flexible. We currently use it for non-developer tasks only and constantly play around with ways to accomplish the one thing that is the most fun: moving "cards" into the "done" column. 



<h3>3. HipChat</h3>
Atlassian's group chat solution has neat integration options and just works quite well. We are not super happy with the native clients yet (Ubuntu, Android), but we are sure those will improve as well. Until then we use the web client mostly. They are also experimenting with voice and video chat functionality, it will be interesting to see how that adds to our productivity. 

<h3>4. <a href="http://kickofflabs.com" target="_blank">Kickofflabs</a>.</h3> 

We are currently testing their suite of features for our pre-launch. It seemed like the painless option among all the viral launch tools out there, and it has a decent feature set while maintaining super easy set up. It will not do magic, a great landing page is nothing without visitors, but it is quite easy to constantly adapt and improve it. 

<h3>5. <a href="http://mailchimp.com" target="_blank">Mailchimp</a>.</h3> 

Of all the mailing solutions out there, Mailchimp wins in terms of usability and features. It was not always that way. I can remember a time where it was almost impossible to use. They really came a long way. Not to say that there is no room for improvement, but it is almost fun to use now. Especially helpful are its integration features and a few days ago they further streamlined the mailing editor. 

<h3>6. <a href="http://shutter-project.org/" target="_blank">Shutter</a>.</h3> 

I chose this as a stand in for any good screenshot tool you prefer on your operating system. I use the really versatile Shutter on Ubuntu and I keep it busy almost all day round. Pictures do say more than a thousand words, so in most cases it is easier to send a screenshot than to describe a problem long and tediously. The most used tool is the selection tool, you can quickly capture a visual bug and send it to the UI team for evaluation. 

<h3>7. <a href="http://wpengine.com/" target="_blank">WPEngine</a>.</h3> 

With all the resources you dedicate to your main product, keeping up with proper hosting of your communication channels is really just another annoying thing. We have tried a few options and just recently switched to WPEngine, which has given our blogs quite a boost so far. It is a very reliable Wordpress hosting platform that takes its main mission very seriously. So serious, they in fact ban bad plugins. 

<h3>8. <a href="http://appear.in" target="_blank">Appear.in</a>.</h3> 

This is a fairly new tool out there for videoconferencing. Based on HTML5 and WebRTC, it is an in-browser alternative to Google Hangout that works without any user accounts or plugins. You can reserve a room, share your screen or chat. So far however, it does not adapt well to low bandwidth as Skype and Hangout do, but definitely check it out, we liked the idea a lot.

<h3>9. <a href="http://www.sublimetext.com/" target="_blank">Sublime Text</a>.</h3> 

A really versatile code editor that comes with a distraction free mode (my favorite, I use <a href="http://uberwriter.wolfvollprecht.de/" target="_blank">UberWriter</a> for similar purposes), API and a lot of useful features for coding to your heart's desire. 

<h3>10. <a href="https://github.com/" target="_blank">Github</a>.</h3> 

Duh, the obvious one last. While we work with a variety of code repositories in Lingohub (next to Github the most prominently supported platform is Bitbucket), Github is our main workhorse. 

<h3>Bonus tool</h3> 

<em>Here is another tool as a bonus</em>: <a href="http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/" target="_blank"><strong>IDEA</strong></a>. This IDE environment for Java and other languages comes with a nice set of integrations and productivity features. Lastlly, we obviously eat our own dogfood and use <a href="https://lingohub.com">Lingohub</a> to localize Lingohub :)

10 Great Tools for Startups We Use Daily

Over a year since <a href="https://lingohub.com">Lingohub</a> left beta, we are taking the user interface (UI) to the next step. Logging into your Lingohub project this week you will notice it looks a lot more like an actual application - and increasingly less like a website. It is time to focus on your actual project, so we did away with unnecessary horizontal navigation items and introduced a vertical navigation bar</strong> to the localization app. The bar will adapt to the context and show the relevant items depending on whether you are in the project inbox, a specific project dashboard or in the translation editor. Quick links will get you do your account settings, profile and support center.

We are tweaking the new UI continuously, so if you notice behavior you are not happy with or notice problems, please submit a support ticket any time. Aside from screen real estate, the new interface is also powered by new technology. <a href="http://angularjs.org/" target="_blank">AngularJS</a> is one of the key technologies we are deploying across our product to increase functionality, compatibility and speed of the application. 

And what will come next? We have already turned our main attention to the <strong>translation editor</strong> itself. Our goal is to increase your productivity and make it even more convenient for collaborating translators to get their work done, while maintaining a high degree of context and flexibility. Without giving too much away, here is a small screenshot of the direction we are taking. It will feel very "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_(programming)" target="_blank">AJAX</a>y" and cut down on the amount of clicking and page-changing. The interface is de-cluttered and optimized. We will announce its release in a newsletter once it is ready.

Here it is, the overview of results from our translation trends survey. Over the last few weeks we talked to hundreds of translators and asked them how they see their work and business trends. We wanted to know what the pressing issues in the industry are to you, what views translators hold towards data protection, pricing and online services. The results of our <strong>Translation Trends 2014 survey</strong> confirms how diverse the translation industry is and how different the needs in various areas are. We are happy about the numerous responses to our curiosity and want to thank those who took time to leave us some personal remarks, especially. Here are a few key takeaways from the survey. 

<h2>In part 1 of our survey, we asked about your work</h2> 

One of the more interesting findings was that over 70 percent of respondents told us they worked on 2-4 jobs per week simultaneously. <h4>How many customers/projects do you handle simultaneously?</h4>

80% of all surveyed said they were currently looking for jobs
<h4>Are you currently looking for new customers?</h4>

While freelancing, over 60% said they also worked for LSPs.
<h4>Are you (regularly) working for LSPs/Translation companies (employed or freelance)?</h4>

Over 70% have had problems with getting paid before. that's quite a signal.
<h4>Do you experience problems with payments or payment reliability of customers?</h4>

By far the most widely used online channel among translators is LinkedIn, followed by others.
<h4>Which of these websites do you use professionally?</h4>

Confidentiality is quite an issue for most jobs among those surveyed.
<h4>How many of your projects are strictly confidental?</h4>

Less than 30 % found existing CAT tools easy to use.

Over 80 percent would at least consider using an online-based solution for CAT.

Not just that, identity theft is a large headache for most translators we surveyed. Reports of data theft are abundant, and while statistically they may be negligent, it is enough for people to rightfully worry about who they share information with.

We felt that some tendencies confirmed our earlier conversations with many of you. Also, some of the free answers that were provided (and some additional questions) helped us greatly in understanding how - especially freelance - translators work and deal with current challenges.
