How cool is this? Some weeks ago UK Data Explorer posted an interactive map that lets you translate English words into 30 official European languages. The European World translator is an interactive map built by James Trimble from the UK Data Explorer, where you can find a lot more applications that build on publicly available open data. A lot of these visualizations are very insightful.

The map translates English words into 30 European languages, visualized directly on the map. I remember a course in linguistics back in college where we mapped changes of words across geographic regions, which helps understand how languages change and how language history is connected to human movement, infrastructure and economic development, wars, conquests and so on.
Have a look at the map and try out some words to get what interesting revelations await you. Let us know in the comments if you know of similar tools or websites for language visualization.
