Machine translation (MT)

Machine translations are computer-generated translations. These translations do not involve any human, but are based on algorithms instead.

LingoHub's machine translation feature provides translations from the DeepL, Amazon Translate, and Google Translate engines. Together they cover more than one hundred languages. The machine translations are then displayed in the editor as suggestions for the translator.

You need to be subscribed to the professional or the enterprise plan to have access to the machine translation feature.

How to use machine translations

Access the machine translation settings

The machine translation settings can be managed in the project preferences, under the translation tools tab.

To access the machine translation settings, follow the steps below:

  1. Click dashboard in the top navigation bar.
  2. Select a project from the left side panel.
  3. Click on preferences in the dashboard overview of the project.
  4. Click on translation tools.

Display machine translations in projects

There are two ways MT can be used in projects:

  • Show machine translation suggestions in the editor - this option is always enabled by default

If checked, machine translations will be displayed in the editor side panel.

When showing the MT suggestions in the editor, the priority is given to the DeepL, and then Amazon Translate translations, as they tend to be more accurate.

  • Fill empty text segments - you can use MT with the Prefill feature to automatically fill empty text segments. You need to start the prefilling from your project dashboard. In our article on Prefill, you learn how to start the process.

Limitations of the Machine Translation features

Machine translation suggestions are meant to be a starting point for translators. It is their responsibility and in your best interest to revise and improve the suggestions and turn them into suitable translations.

While machine translation providers have come a long way in the last decade, their translations often lack certain nuances specific to languages. Words can be misinterpreted, or context might be lost. That is why LingoHub strongly recommends to always check and improve machine translated text segments.
